United States and China are 'committed to cooperating' to tackle climate change

In call with Macron and Merkel, Xi slams EU's carbon tax plan

The statement added that the two countries will take other actions in the short term to further contribute to addressing the climate crisis and will cooperate to promote a successful COP 26 in Glasgow.

Xi previous year announced that China, the world's biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, would achieve a peak in carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.

The Chinese leader's comments come as U.S. climate envoy John Kerry is in Shanghai to drum up support from the world's biggest polluter for America's drive to address environmental challenges.

Kerry is in China for meetings with his counterparts until Saturday - the first visit by an official from the new USA administration.

The United States and China are committed to cooperating with each other and with other countries to tackle the climate crisis, according to a joint statement issued on Sunday by the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

Their cooperation is key to a success of global efforts to curb climate change, but frayed ties over human rights, trade and China's territorial claims to Taiwan and the South China Sea have been threatening to undermine such efforts.

Both countries look forward to the US-hosted Leaders Summit on Climate on April 22/23.

"For a big country with 1.4 billion people, these goals are not easily delivered", Le said during an interview with The Associated Press in Beijing.

But to achieve the global climate goal, Kerry said words must be put into action and urged China to reduce its use of coal. "I am afraid this is not very realistic".

Biden, who has said that fighting global warming is among his highest priorities, had the United States rejoin the Paris climate accord in the first hours of his presidency, undoing the USA withdrawal ordered by predecessor Donald Trump.

The US and China will also develop long-term strategies to become carbon neutral, in time for the United Nations climate summit in Glasgow, UK in November. Countries pledged then to limit global warming to "well below" 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) above preindustrial levels and possibly keep to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

If the United States refuses to work with China on climate because of other disagreements, "you're just killing yourself", Kerry told CNN before his trip to Shanghai.

The joint statement listed multiple avenues of cooperation between the United States and China, the world's top two economies which together account for almost half of the greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change.
