Mr Mondale's family earlier said in a statement: "It is with profound sadness that we share news that our beloved dad passed away".

"When I arrived in the United States Senate in 1973, Walter Mondale was one of the first people to greet me".

"I took Fritz's roadmap", Biden said at an event honoring Mondale in 2015.

Mondale was US ambassador to Japan from 1993 and 1996 under the then administration of Bill Clinton, after serving as vice president to Jimmy Carter for four years through January 1981.

Mondale also wrote an email to be sent upon his death to 320 former staffers, including many who worked for him decades ago.

"When President Obama asked me to consider being his Vice President, Fritz was my first call and trusted guide". Fritz Mondale provided us all with a model for public service and private behavior.

Biden also honored the work Mondale did as a senator.

Mondale's own try for the White House, in 1984, came at the zenith of Ronald Reagan's popularity.

"He not only created a path for himself, he helped others do the same".

Mr Mondale was Jimmy Carter's running mate for his winning 1976 presidential bid and defeat four years later. "I will miss him dearly".

In April 1996, then Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto and Mondale reached a key agreement between Washington and Tokyo that the land used for the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in a crowded residential area in Ginowan in Okinawa should be returned to Japan.

He added: "As a Senator, an Ambassador, a Vice President, and a candidate for President, he lived and spread those values".
