PM to front media after new positive border worker case confirmed

Following months of negotiations between the largely coronavirus-free neighbors, the "trans-Tasman travel bubble" allows Australians and New Zealanders to visit each others' country without any restrictions.

"This person has done the right things - they have been regularly tested at their workplace, and we know they have been using the NZ COVID Tracer app, with Bluetooth turned on".

Due to the nature of their work, they were part of a routine testing program.

Ms Ardern, speaking after the New Zealand Ministry of Health confirmed authorities were following the usual process of isolating the case, interviewing them and tracing their contact movements was underway, revealed she had not yet spoken to Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Ardern said the case was not connected to the travel bubble with Australia, and the agreement was not impacted.

"This was border worker who did work in an environment where they were coming into contact with the planes that are used to transport people from Red Zones, from high-risk countries", Ardern said.

Ardern told reporters in Auckland that today's case is unlikely to affect that bubble.

Ms Ardern said the fact the worker has tested positive after being vaccinated is a "really important opportunity to point out that the vaccine is 95 per cent effective at reducing symptomatic onset".

They must not be awaiting the results of a Covid test, nor have any Covid symptoms, amongst other criteria.

Victoria recorded zero new local cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, with four new cases in hotel quarantine.

"In situations like this a lot of pressure gets put on aviation workers and airport workers. sometimes there's a lot of blame put onto them".

"And as we know this virus is very hard to contain, and I think the public should be reassured that there are very good health and safety regulations in place". "So regular testing. And it was their most recent test in which this case has been picked up".

What does the new case mean for the bubble?

The news comes barely 24 hours after New Zealand and Australia opened their travel bubble.

The seven-day rolling average up to yesterday is 4,254 tests processed.

One was part of a bubble with two previously reported cases and had been transferred to a quarantine facility on 4 April.

"The more people that are vaccinated, the more protected we will all be", the Health Ministry said.
