India hits record 200000 daily Covid cases, hospitals stretched

India Covid-19 Patients

India is only the second country in the world after the United States to cross the threshold of 200,000 new cases a day.

These record new positive cases came out of record 1.08 lakh tests conducted the previous day, the bulletin said, adding, the positivity rate mounted to 15.92 per cent.

India also added 1,038 deaths in the past day, taking the total to nearly 175,000, the health ministry data showed, although on a per capita basis India is far behind many other countries.

Days after declaring 14 private hospitals in the city as "full COVID-19" facilities, the Delhi government on Wednesday revised its decision to allow certain beds to be used for non-COVID patients as well.

Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, West Bengal and Bihar are the nine states that recorded their highest ever cases in the last 24 hours.

"We are a 900-bed hospital, but there are about 60 patients waiting and we don't have space for them".

The surge was the seventh record daily increase in the last eight days.

In capital Delhi, too, daily Covid-19 cases are hitting new records, with doctors warning the surge could be deadlier than in 2020.

"We are definitely overburdened. This time the number is very high and increasing very rapidly, going (at a) very fast speed, so the situation is really alarming", said LNJP Medical Director Suresh Kumar.

"Today we have 158 admissions in Lok Nayak alone", Kumar said.

The Indian government has not made any move to cancel a major Hindu festival now underway on the banks of the Ganges River, where more than 1.3 million people participated in a bathing ritual on Wednesday.

India has begun its vaccination drive, but progress has been slow. "If such conditions persist, the death toll will rise", the head of a medical body in Ahmedabad wrote in a letter to the Gujarat state chief minister.

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries will supply 100 metric tonnes of additional oxygen to Maharashtra, a state minister said.

Hundreds of thousands of people continued to throng to the Kumbh Mela in Uttarakhand's Haridwar as officials said the religious gathering will not be cut short due to the rising Covid cases and that it will continue till April 30.
