Five others with injuries "consistent with gunshot wounds" were transported to local hospitals for treatment and two victims were treated at the scene, the statement said.

The gunman opened fire outside and inside a FedEx Ground facility near Indianapolis's main airport Thursday night, killing eight people, wounding several others and sending witnesses running before taking his own life, police said. The investigators are searching a home in Indianapolis associated with Hole and have seized evidence, including desktop computers and other electronic media, the officials said.

It was not clear if the unnamed gunman worked at the FedEx facility or what his motive was, and the dead were yet to be identified. He said the shooter apparently died by suicide shortly before police entered the building.

"I am communicating with local authorities to get all details of the attack and my office stands ready to help everyone affected any way we can", he said, later calling for change and "gun safety reforms now!"

It's unclear how many workers were on duty at the time of the shooting.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to 8951 Mirabel Road just after 11 p.m. Thursday on reports of shots fired. He says he will stay with the families until they get more information.

A reporter with WRTV, an Indianapolis station, posted an interview on Twitter with a man who said he had been at the facility when the shooting broke out and later saw a body on the floor. "The safety of our team members is our top priority, and we are fully cooperating with investigating authorities", he added.

At the end of March, a gunman killed four people, including a 9-year-old boy, at a real estate office in Southern California.

The families' agonizing waiting was exacerbated by the fact that most employees aren't allowed to carry cellphones inside the FedEx building, making contact with them hard. Let us look out for one another, as we have done all throughout this past challenging year, and as we send our most heartfelt sympathies to all who have been affected by this awful act of violence.

President Joe Biden said he had been briefed on the shooting and called gun violence "an epidemic" in the U.S.

"Too many Americans are dying every single day from gun violence".

"I saw a man with a submachine gun of some sort, an automatic rifle and he was firing in the open", Jeremiah Miller said.

"It's an worldwide embarrassment", the Democrat told Congress members and gun control activists at a White House ceremony.

A man told WTTV that his niece was sitting in the driver's seat of her auto when the gunfire erupted, and she was wounded. They encountered an "active shooter incident", she said. "She's fine, she's in the hospital now", Parminder Singh said.
