Biden targets April 19 for wider USA vaccine delivery

Biden set to announce on Tuesday that all USA adults will be eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine by April 19.

So-called vaccine passports, showing that someone has been inoculated against Covid-19, have been touted around the world as a potentially powerful tool in safely reopening countries to mass gatherings and travel.

Biden is set to tour a vaccination site in Virginia on Tuesday before giving his speech at 3:45 pm while Vice President Kamala Harris will visit a labor union-run vaccine site in Chicago forged as a collaboration between the city of Chicago and the Chicago Federation of Labor.

Psaki's comments came during a press briefing in response to a question about whether President Biden is regretful that he may have "tipped the scale" in influencing Major League Baseball's decision to move its 2021 All-Star game from Atlanta, reportedly costing the area $100 million in tourism revenue.

"We share the sentiments of Pope Francis who has said that getting vaccinated is a moral obligation", Biden said. It also comes as a flood of vaccine supply is being sent to states this week. That means Americans no longer need to check with state and local websites to see whether they qualify, she said.

Upon taking office in January, Biden set a goal of delivering 100 million shots into people's arms within his first 100 days in office, which is the end of April. "There are going to be more people waiting", she said.

She continued: "That Georgia was just one of the first states to act on a concerted effort to use easily disprovable conspiracy theories to fuel their attempts to make it even harder for eligible Americans to vote". That goal has since been doubled to 200 million.

That allocation brings the total amount of vaccine distributed over the past three weeks to more than 90 million doses, Psaki said. Four in 10 Americans have had at least one vaccine dose, a rate far ahead of most countries.

Pfizer and BioNTech's two-dose vaccine series are authorized for people aged 16 and up, while Moderna and Johnson & Johnson's vaccines are only authorized for adults 18 and above.

US vaccine distribution began haltingly under Biden's predecessor, Donald Trump.
