Uganda bans social media ahead of election

"The army has this morning raided my home, arrested all my security guards and anyone they could see around my premises", Wine, who is the opposition frontrunner, said on Twitter.

The East African nation is holding presidential and parliamentary elections after a tense and bloody campaign, with President Yoweri Museveni, 76, facing a stiff challenge from the pop star-turned-politician Bobi Wine, 38.

The Ugandan military and police force are yet to comment on Wine's statement.

Scores of opposition protesters have been killed during a campaign scarred by crackdowns on Wine's rallies which the authorities say contravene curbs on gatherings to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Wine has a strong following among the poor and a young population who have known only the 35-year reign of Museveni, but the powerful incumbent is seen as nearly impossible to unseat.

He is among 11 candidates seeking to unseat President Museveni who has been in power for 34 years now as Uganda goes to the polls on Thursday, January 14, 2021. Although there have been accusations of vote rigging.

While Mr Museveni was welcomed for bringing stability after the brutal reigns of two dictators, opponents say his government has become riddled with corruption and nepotism.

Ugandans go vote on Thursday for new parliament and president.

Facebook has said that they have shut down a slew of accounts belonging to Ugandan officials that have been accused to manipulate public debate ahead of elections.

UCC spokesman Ibrahim Bbosa told this reporter: "I am not aware of a directive to switch off internet or social media platforms".

Di accounts wey di United States social media giant take down na fake and duplicate accounts wey dey linked to di kontri ministry of information and dem dey use am post as di kontrii dey prepare for elections dis week.

Anim-Addo said the network was linked to the government ministry of information and communications technology.

Bobi Wine rather believes that the homosexuality talk is a political move to divert him from his political aspirations.
