Donald Trump issues emergency declaration in Washington DC

Armed supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump

Following the riots, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have called for Trump to leave office or be removed before Biden is sworn in on January 20.

Schumer told Wray that they must also be fully prosecuted to the full extent of federal law.

The protestors will reportedly also "storm" government offices in every state the day President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated "regardless of whether the states certified electoral votes for Biden or Trump", according to ABC News.

"In light of the attack on the Capitol and intelligence suggesting further violence is likely during the Inaugural period, my administration has re-evaluated our preparedness posture for the Inauguration, including requesting the extension of D.C. National Guard support through January 24, 2021", Bowser wrote in the letter. The letter was obtained by The Associated Press. Generally, in order to be placed on the list, the government must have information that the person presents "a threat of committing terrorism" to the aircraft or the USA homeland or US facilities.

At least one lawmaker asked the Pentagon to do more.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser called for the U.S. Interior Department to cancel public-gathering permits through January 24.

Incoming Senate leader Chuck Schumer of NY is exploring using a little-used emergency tool to call the Senate back sooner if needed, a Senate Democratic aide said, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The ensuing chaos at the Capitol resulted in five deaths, including that of a 42-year-old Capitol Police officer who died after Trump supporters beat him with a fire extinguisher.

The violence occurred shortly after Trump urged supporters to march on the Capitol during a rally where he repeated false claims that the November 3 election was "rigged" against him.

Emergency protective measures, limited to direct Federal assistance, will be provided at 100 percent Federal funding, the White House said.

He made the remarks to reporters at the White House ahead of his departure to Alamo, Texas-the first public comments to reporters since he delivered a speech to protesters near the Capitol on January 6. "And I agree with him and I believe him", Lamb said.

In Michigan, another swing state where Biden's victory was contested by Trump, the state's Capitol Commission, which oversees the legislature, issued an order to ban the open carrying of weapons inside the Capitol building in Lansing.

His trip to Alamo, Texas, where he will tout claims of success in building a US-Mexican border wall, is his first live public appearance since he rallied thousands of followers on the National Mall to march on Congress. The report was first posted Monday by Yahoo News and verified to the Star Tribune on Tuesday as legitimate by a source who has seen the document.

Rep. John Curtis says he would support a full impeachment process of President Donald Trump, but he does not support the efforts of some lawmakers to rush the process. But he said, "We want no violence".
