762 new cases of COVID-19 reported in BC, 10 deaths

Record number of new COVID-19 cases found within Island Health

The Northern Health region saw an additional 13 cases, marking a total of 552, with 75 active. The number of hospitalizations has reached 209, breaking the previous record of 198 that was also set on Tuesday, with 58 patients in intensive care or critical care units.

On top of the almost 7,000 active cases in the province, officials said there are 9,871 people under active health monitoring due to exposure to a known COVID-19 case.

Canada has now recorded a total of 311,109 cases of COVID-19 and 11,186 deaths from the disease. With the latest deaths, the provincial death toll stands at 320.

"While your personal efforts may seem small or (to be) having little impact, the collective benefit to every community in every region is significant". A further 9,871 people are being actively monitored by public health teams as a result of an identified exposure to a known case of the virus.

"Just as we put on our jackets to keep us warm in the rain and snow, so too are our COVID-19 safety layers there to protect all of us".

There have been three new health-care facility outbreaks at Agecare Harmony Court Estates, Menno Home and at Peace Villa.

Now is the time to stay small, stay local and do your part - at home, work, school and in your community. The outbreak at Normanna has been declared over.

The new provincial health orders restrict social gatherings of any size with anyone outside of your immediate household, as well as indoor group physical activities, including yoga, spin, group fitness and dance classes.

Earlier today, Premier John Horgan said non-essential travel is prohibited anywhere in British Columbia for the next two weeks at least.

Henry also made a recommendation that people in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley not travel unless it is essential.
