Magnitude 5.4 quake hits Korea's southeastern coastal city of Pohang

The agency assessed that the quake was an aftershock of the five-point-four magnitude natural disaster that rattled the city earlier on Wednesday, which left 57 injured and one-thousand-536 displaced.

More than 50 people were reportedly injured in in rare 5.4-magnitude quake that struck the southeastern city of Pohang on Wednesday afternoon, damaging buildings, breaking windows and sending people running from homes.

SEOUL-South Korea postponed its annual university entrance exam by a week on Wednesday after a rare quake rattled the country, shaking buildings and causing damage but no deaths.

As a result, South Korea's schools postponed the college entrance exams, which are highly competitive and essentially shut down the entire nation.

Paik Un-gyu, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, inspected Wolsong nuclear power complex in Gyeongju, 370 kilometers southeast of Seoul, which remains in operation after the second-strongest tremor recorded in the country rocked the region on Wednesday. The biggest quake occurred in September 2016, when a 5.8 magnitude occurred near the ancient city of Gyeongju, which is close to Pohang.


More than 1,000 houses and dozens of other buildings and cars were damaged or destroyed, and cracks and other damage were found in military facilities, bridges, port facilities and water supply facilities.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the quake occurred at around 9:02 a.m. Thursday at a location eight kilometers north of Pohang's Buk district.

Shaking was felt across the country and there were numerous reports of minor damage.

"First of all, what's urgent is to recover from the damage and to ease the inconvenience of Pohang citizens", Lee said at the start of the meeting attended by ministers and senior officials from 10 government agencies, including the interior ministry and the Korea Meteorological Administration.

South Korea has relatively little seismic activity, compared with Japan to the east.
