When he made that remark, Clapper said on Sunday, he didn't know of recent disclosures, including details of a meeting where a Russian lawyer offered Trump's eldest son "information that would incriminate" Democrat Hillary Clinton, and former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos telling investigators he worked to obtain "dirt" on Clinton from the Russian government. "I believe that he feels that he and Russian Federation did not meddle in the election", Trump said during a news conference in Vietnam, referring to Putin.
James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence, called the threat from Russian Federation "manifest and obvious".
WASHINGTON ― Two former top US intelligence officials on Sunday denounced President Donald Trump's repeated refusal to definitively affirm Russian meddling in the 2016 election, saying the president is being manipulated by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
President Trump on November 11 said he believes that Russian President Vladimir Putin is being truthful when he denies that Russia meddled in the 2016 presidential election.
"He said he didn't meddle".
'I asked him again. You can only ask so many times. I just asked him again. So you look at that and you have President Putin very strongly, vehemently says he had nothing to do with them.
He added that whenever they had met, Putin denied ordering Russia's election meddling.
"Every time he sees me, he says, 'I didn't do that, '" Trump said, as reported by CNN. "Unfortunately, we did not have enough time to get down to some more details", he said, "because we have many matters to discuss".
His lengthy Asia trip down to its final days, President Donald Trump opted Monday to publicly prioritize strategic interests over human rights, declining to shine a spotlight on the violent drug war overseen by his Philippine host. John McCain, "to think that you believe that [Putin] is saying he did not interfere in the election". Trump also said something that he said before, which is that there are those who are saying if he did do it, he wouldn't have gotten caught.
In response, Brennan said Trump is perhaps being manipulated by Putin.
Ex-CIA Director Claims Trump Scared Of Putin
Trump said he would wait until his return to Washington on Wednesday to elaborate with a "major statement" on those two topics but hinted at progress while in Manila. "And that's very important for someone to believe". Trump, however, has said he does not believe that Russian Federation actively sought to help him.
Trump has long cast doubt on the intelligence community's conclusion that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election, particularly the finding that the Kremlin mounted the effort specifically to help Trump and to hurt his opponent, former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. I believe in our intel agencies, our intelligence agencies.
Sen. Mark R. Warner (Va.), the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in a statement that he was left "completely speechless" by Trump's willingness "to take the word of Vladimir Putin, a former intelligence operator who spent years working against us, over the conclusions of our own combined intelligence community".
He also denigrated Clapper, Brennan, and former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey as "political hacks" in what appeared to be an attempt to discredit their agencies' conclusions regarding election-meddling.
"I mean, give me a break, they are political hacks", Trump said of the three men. "Comey is proven now to be a liar and he's proven to be a leaker", POTUS said. They were sanctioned at a very high level. "Putin categorically rejected even the hypothetical possibility that Russia could have in some way interfered in the US electoral process", he was quoted by Russian news agencies as telling reporters after CNN quoted him saying that the subject wasn't brought up during the talks. And afterward, Trump spoke with reporters on Air Force One. "But they were saying there were 17, there were actually four".
More importantly, the four that did put together the assessment are, as Brennan noted on Sunday, primarily tasked with counterintelligence and examining the risk Russian Federation poses.
"Trump also took to Twitter to discuss his meeting with Putin, addressing "haters" and fools" he said fail to see the value of a positive relationship with Russian Federation.
"There [sic] always playing politics - bad for our country", Trump said. He wants to have a good relationship with Putin, not argue about the election but work on Syria and North Korea and Ukraine.
Trump also cast blame on former president Barack Obama and Clinton, a former secretary of state, who famously attempted a "reset" of US relations with Russian Federation during Obama's first term.
