In comparison, the Sahara desert has 100 times the amount of water than what SOFIA detected in the lunar soil. Using its Faint Object infraRed CAmera for the SOFIA Telescope (FORCAST), the researchers said SOFIA was able to pick up the specific wavelength unique to water molecules and discovered a relatively surprising concentration in the sunny Clavius Crater. The newly discovered reef adds to the seven other tall detached reefs found in the area since the late 1800s. The New York Post reports that the underwater "edifice" chalked up to a whooping 1,640 feet tall. The collection includes the reef at Raine Island, which is the world's most important green sea turtle nesting area.
