Astronomers watch black hole stretch a star into stellar Astronomers watch black hole stretch a star into stellar "spaghetti"
- October 15, 2020

The new TDE, first spotted in September of a year ago and named AT2019qiz, is now helping a team led by astronomer Matt Nicholl of the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom shed light on the origin of this dust. Through this recent TDE, we are starting to see how black holes can destroy stars and seed the galaxy with new material at the same time. The star had a mass similar to our sun and had lost half of it to the black hole a million times more massive further explained ... (more...)

Mars at its brightest until 2035 Mars at its brightest until 2035
- October 15, 2020

For the people of the U.S., this will give you a foretaste of what to see after sunset. Earth and Mars have elliptical, or egg-shaped, paths around the sun; meaning the distance between the two planets widens and narrows as they orbit. "Every 26 months, a fast Earth catches up to Mars and slows it down". Mars isn't the only show in the sky in October. For this year's Mars opposition, observers in Northern Hemisphere are extremely lucky , and the planet won't be comparably close and ... (more...)
