Enjoy the awesome sight of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket soaring skyward, and also the fantastic moment the booster returns to Earth and lands upright, a feat that never ceases to amaze. Tree is several hundred miles north to attempt the same feat after SpaceX's Starlink-11 launch (now NET September 1st). The first stage detached before it encountered any more land, but the second stage did fly over Cuba briefly. (more...)

Rocket Lab's Electron rocket departed the launch site at New Zealand's Mahia Peninsula on Sunday, August 30 at 8:05 p.m. PT (3:05 p.m. local time on Monday, August 31). In its 14th launch, the Electron booster successfully cleared the pad, performed a stage separation and deployed the payload to orbit in what was deemed the flawless mission. (more...)

Sasol had temporarily shut down facilities at Lake Charles in Louisiana and Greens Bayou and Winnie in Texas in preparation for the hurricane. Fourteen people were killed when the Category 4 storm devastated the area early Thursday, with more than half of them succumbing to carbon monoxide poisoning because of the improper use of power generators. The first happened on March 9, while the last one will appear on May 7. Reports from an Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 145 miles per hour (230 km/h) with higher gusts. Hennaye reportedly asked another boat to track the mother dolphin, after the baby had died, since his own boat was low on fuel. Fisheries minister Sudheer Maudhoo told a press conference that all 18 of the whales, a member of the dolphin family, had died, but that there was "no trace of hydrocarbons on them or in their respiratory system". Laura is a large hurricane , the National Weather Service says, with hurricane-force winds extending out up to 70 miles from the center and tropical-storm force winds extending up to 175 miles. "After landfall, rapid weakening will occur, but Laura will bring a swath of damaging winds well inland over western Louisiana and eastern Texas". Rainfall of 2-5 inches is possible with higher isolated amounts in southwest MS and southeast Louisiana. (more...)

The hurricane has been tapping into the favourable Gulf waters, and is still set to strengthen even more so, as a Category 4 storm , before making landfall near the Louisiana-Texas border Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Expect a storm surge of 2-4 feet with flooding on waterways in low-lying areas. Gasoline demand in key consuming nations appears stuck at about 10% to 15% below year-earlier levels, while jet fuel usage is much further behind. (more...)
