Their splash-down on Sunday in the Gulf of Mexico off Florida - a mode of return for human spaceflight last used by NASA 45 years ago - capped the first launch of astronauts from US soil in nine years. The affected areas include: Caledon, Orangeville, Grand Valley, Southern Dufferin County, Mount Forest, Arthur and Northern Wellington County. Environment Canada called it a risky and potentially life-threatening situation. People in these areas are being warned to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. The research drillship JOIDES Resolution drilled numerous sediment cores 100 meters below the seafloor and almost 6,000 meters below the ocean's surface. When sediment builds up quickly, the pressure pushes out any oxygen that might otherwise linger between the grains to keep aerobic microbes alive. With the newly developed ability to grow, manipulate and characterize ancient microorganisms, the research team is looking forward to applying a similar approach to other questions about the ... China blasted off a Mars probe on a rocket that aims to eventually land a rover. In February, the probe is expected to reach Mars where it will deploy a rover to explore the planet for 90 days.
