Hubble peers into a Cosmic Reef
- June 14, 2020
Shuttle astronauts visited Hubble five times, from 1993 to 2009, to make improvements and repairs to the 13-meter-long observatory. It's primary mirror had been partially shaped by an improperly calibrated tool , which created a spherical aberration in the surface. (more...)

Putin hits out over struggle to contain oil spill
- June 13, 2020
A major oil spill that happened in Russian Federation and affected the Arctic Circle was spotted from space by two satellites of the European Space Agency (ESA). In total, the oil spill contaminated a massive land area of 135 square miles. If left unattended, the oil could contaminate local waterways and a delicate Arctic ecosystem. (more...)

Pangolin released into wild under China's new protections
- June 12, 2020
Although pangolin scales are made of keratin - the same material found in human fingernails and rhino horn - traditional Chinese medicine promotes the belief that they improve blood circulation and reduce inflammation. With that new status, the animal has been officially removed from the latest version of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia for 2020 - evidently, it was still on there even after it was granted second-class state protection and in the wake of China banning the hunting of the mammal in ... Australian scientists turn to drones to protect sea turtles
- June 12, 2020
Green sea turtles are named for the greenish colour of their cartilage and fat and are found mainly in tropical and subtropical waters. In December of 2019, researchers flew a drone over Raine Island to survey up to 64,000 of the endangered turtles as they came ashore to nest. (more...)

Researchers Stunned to Discover Ancient Crocodiles That Walked on Two Legs
- June 12, 2020
Based on the measurement of these tracks, the authors deduced that they were made by an animal whose feet's length was similar to that of a human being. The new study has also solved a tracking mystery dating back to 2012, when some poorly preserved tracks of a bipedal animal were first found in another South Korean rock unit, described as "enigmatic". Scientists spot cyclical pattern in mysterious cosmic radio bursts
- June 11, 2020
Unlike the first FRB ( fast radio burst ), the latter appears to follow a burst pattern of about 16 days, as it results in a new burst cycle every 157 days. It appears that the real-life versions of ALF and E.T . are not trying to contact us, which makes sense at the moment. "The signals are a sign of energetic events that are on the extreme scale of the cosmos", MIT Technology Review wrote earlier this year. (more...)

Today is World Oceans Day 2020
- June 10, 2020
We simply can not stand by while oceans acidify, sea levels rise and pollution increases. The greenhouse gas carbon dioxide is also turning ocean waters acidic, and an influx of freshwater from melting glaciers threatens to alter the weather-driving currents: the Atlantic Ocean's currents have slowed by about 15 percent over the past few decades. Tropical Storm Cristobal made landfall along the Louisiana coast and is now moving northward. "It's very efficient, very tropical rainfall", National Hurricane Centre director Ken Graham said in a Facebook video. Cristobal emerged out of Tropical Storm Amanda, which left at least 26 people dead across Central America and brought flooding and landslides. The Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1 and ends on November 30. (more...)

NASA awards contract to Northrop Grumman to design lunar Gateway station
- June 09, 2020
A contract modification will come later to fund full development and testing of HALO. Afterward, the company is to sign a second contract that details the assembly of the actual HALO module scheduled to travel to space in 2023. Combining the two modules on the ground, he noted, means optimizing systems, like communications and batteries, that each element needed as a separate spacecraft but may be redundant now they will be combined before launch. Donald Trump aims tweets at National Football League over protests to reopen anthem debate
- June 09, 2020
Goodell sought to stop the bleeding by instituting new rules to dissuade anthem kneeling and arguing, "Like many of our fans, we believe that everyone should stand for the national anthem". "Let me tell you something ... that [Mahomes' involvement] was huge", Doug Williams said on the phone Saturday. In a league where 70% of the players are black and those players are paid a salary that places them in the top 1% of wage earners in America, it is frankly incredible that this insidious ... Burnaby hit by a COVID-19 'outbreak' at warming centre
- June 09, 2020
Epidemiologically-linked cases are close contacts of a person who tested positive, but for any of variety of reasons did not get a positive test - they may have had mild illness or were identified when illness was recovered. Henry also revealed the newest data related to COVID-19. Other spikes around this time were recorded at the Mission Institute, a federal correctional facility where 120 inmates were ultimately infected with the contagion before the outbreak was declared over May 28.
