It will also be the first time anywhere a private company, SpaceX , will have built and funded the rocket. Space Force's launch of an X-37B space plane, was also delayed by weather over the weekend. But NASA and SpaceX needed more time. Astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley should arrive at the International Space Station about 19 hours later. (more...)

The one just launched features an extra compartment for experiments, including several for NASA. The weather pattern to begin the week will be due to an upper level low out toward Illinois/Indiana being blocked (or slow to move east) due to Tropical Storm Arthur in the Atlantic. Despite expectations, Arthur hasn't strengthened much and had winds of 45 miles per hour Monday morning, making it a minimal tropical storm. The timing of Arthur coincided with North Carolina's first phase of its reopening strategy amid the coronavirus pandemic. (more...)

Managed by the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office, the X-37B program performs risk reduction, experimentation and concept of operations development for reusable space vehicle technologies. The launch was dedicated to front line workers and those affected by the pandemic. The company said it followed health advice for the launch. Earlier it had said, "The weather is "no go" due to the rain showers streaming over the pad that violate the Cumulus Cloud Rule and high ground winds". (more...)

Space.com noted that the X-37B's new service module, a cylindrical add-on beneath the spacecraft, lets it carry more payloads than before. These include the US Air Force Academy's FalconASAT-8 small satellite , which will be deployed later this year to test electromagnetic propulsion, two NASA experiments to study the effects of radiation and other space effects on various materials and food crop seeds, and a Naval Research Laboratory investigation on how sunlight can be converted into ...
