The new study, published online in Science on April 30 , provides insights into how polar ice sheets are changing, demonstrating that small gains of ice in East Antarctica are dwarfed by massive losses in West Antarctica . In Greenland, there was a significant amount of thinning of coastal glaciers , Smith said. The majority of Antarctica's contribution to sea level rise comes from its glaciers flowing into the ocean as warmer water erodes the ice. (more...)

SpaceX will use Starship - a craft now in development that the company hopes to one day use to send people to places like Mars - to bring crew and cargo from orbit around the Moon to its surface. But Congress needs to approve the Nasa budget, which will have to increase by $3bn in 2021 to support the lunar lander development. On April 30, 2020, the British auction house announced that the fifth-largest chunk of the Moon - a 29-pound (13.5-kilogram) rock dubbed NWA 12691 - was being offered for private sale for a "reasonable' $2.5 million!" This meteorite is said to be a part of a massive meteorite shower that spanned across the Western Saharan, Algerian and Mauritanian borders, and is responsible for almost half of all known lunar meteorites, almost 250 kg, and NWA 12691 was found in 2018 in the Sahara Desert. It also had more openings (called foramina ) in its cranium than any known mammal, the researchers say , which may have enhanced the sensitivity of its snout and whiskers, by enabling passage for nerves and blood vessels through the skull. The 2-kilometer-wide asteroid passing by the Earth will provide astronomers with an exceptional opportunity to study the object in great detail. In an interview posted on the space agency's website, NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies manager Paul Chodas say they believe they have found and tracked about 90% of the near-earth objects that are at least a kilometer wide and could pose a threat to earth. The NASA VITAL provides respiratory support for patients that are experiencing respiratory failure or insufficiency. The agency's Jet Propulsion Laboratory designed the device for coronavirus patients with rapid production in mind. "We believe today's action will increase availability of these life-saving medical devices". The Gateway is still on the agenda for use in later missions. Images taken later in the month revealed as many as 30 separate fragments. UCLA's David Jewitt is leader of one of two Hubble teams who imaged the doomed comet. Josh Knelson, reeve of Mackenzie County, where at least 451 people have been evacuated, said that in some areas, there was no realistic way to prevent flooding by sandbagging because of the size of ice jams .
