The previously unknown virus has caused global concern because of its similarity to the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) pathogen, which killed hundreds across mainland China and Hong Kong in 2002-2003. At slightly longer wavelengths, infrared light can be used to study planetary systems around other stars and the disks that form them. The observation study of TRAPPIST-1 caused Spitzer to be recognized by the whole world. In addition to designing Spitzer's instrumentation, Rochester faculty also led the observatory's largest observational programs on star and planet formation, making a specialty of those which used the infrared spectrograph. The International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration ( ITGC ) announced the completion of this first-ever major research venture on the glacier coincident with the 200-year anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica in 1820. They have drilled the glacier for the first time between 300 and 700 meters through the ice to the ocean, extracting cores to find out more information about the glacier's history and future evolution. Due to the natural decay of the material inside the RTG, Voyager 2's power budget goes down by about 4 watts per year. The fault protection software routine was created to automatically manage such an event, and by design, it appears to have turned off Voyager 2's science instruments to make up for the power deficit.
