Nuclear explosion level asteroid had close-shave with Earth Nuclear explosion level asteroid had close-shave with Earth
- July 30, 2019

While that might seem like an astronomical number, that's only 20% of the distance between the Earth and the moon, so in universal terms, that qualifies as a pretty narrow miss. Both the 2019 OK and Chelyabinsk meteor snuck past devices of astronomers & paid surprise visits. Astronomers, however, stated the fact that they couldn't see its approaching because the asteroid has perfectly placed its direction to come from the sun. (more...)

In our own solar system, there are either small, rocky planets like Earth, Mercury, Venus, and Mars, or much larger planets like Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune that are dominated by gasses rather than land. TESS found TOI 270's intriguing planets by looking for a dimming of the host star that indicates a planet passing around it. While thousands of exoplanet discoveries have already been made, only a handful have been discovered circling relatively young stars. (more...)

The best time to see the peak was in the early morning hours before sunrise today but you should still be able to see the meteors once the skies darken. It is crucial to stay away from any source of light that could ruin your viewing experience. "Looking halfway between the horizon and the zenith, and 45 degrees from the constellation of Aquarius will improve your chances of viewing the Delta Aquariids", NASA said . (more...)

The Chandrayaan-2 mission will be the first to explore the Moon's south pole region. The lunar South Pole is especially interesting because the area remains in shadows and is much larger than its North Pole. The first mission Chandrayaan-1, launched in 2008, orbited the Moon, but did not land. Researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in the USA noted that in the most enticing feature of this southernmost region is the craters, some of which never see the light of day reach their ... Just as baseball players have trouble spotting balls when the Sun is in their eyes, so too do telescopes have a harder time tracking small objects when they're closer to the Sun. The space agency has been working to pinpoint NEOs in the 140-meter range, with a goal of identifying at least 90 percent of these objects. On NASA's Sentry earth impact monitoring page, the space company says, "one must bear in mind that an Earth collision by a sizable NEA (near Earth asteroid) is a very low ... (more...)
