The Lyrids will continue each night through April 26. That will also be the best time to see slower, longer meteors that streak horizontally across the sky, called earthgrazers. There's no need to take binoculars or a telescope with you, just find a suitably dark area and hope there's not too much cloud. "Though a bright, almost full moon might obscure some of the view". The meteors can appear all across the sky, but they seem to streak out of a spot to the northeast of the bright star Vega (called the meteor shower's radiant). The Lyrids can produce up to 18 meteors per hour, with occasional fireballs. Nights without a moon in the sky will be ideal for seeing the meteors. "Simply find a dark, open sky away from artificial lights", the USA space agency writes on its website. (more...)

People all over Maryland reported seeing a massive meteor falling from the sky Tuesday night. The American Meteor Society says the fireball was traveling northwest to southeast over New Jersey and was visible from Vermont to Virginia. It's unknown what caused the incident, however, astronomers say it's unlikely that Tuesday night's fireball was connected to the annual Lyrid meteor shower , which already started this week. The black hole that scientists took a picture of is in the center of a galaxy called M87 and it is far bigger than anything in the Milky Way.
