In an effort to better understand the physical properties of the Ross Ice Shelf, researchers buried 34 seismic sensors under its snowy surface (which, often several meters deep, acts as insulation). Though photographs may present the barren landscapes of Antarctica as eerily calm and peaceful, at least when no storms are raging, the largely lifeless continent and the ice shelves surrounding it produce a medley of bizarrely lovely sounds. The cause of Chandra's safe mode on October 10 has now been understood and the Operations team has successfully returned the spacecraft to its normal pointing mode, according to the U.S. Such was the case last week with the beloved Hubble Space Telescope , which went into safe mode after another of its six gyroscopes failed. French President Emmanuel Macron has extended the "solidarity" of the French nation to residents of the southwestern region struck by flash flooding and to the families of people who died in the disaster. Several months' worth of rain fell in just a few hours overnight in the region of Aude, with one river rising by more than 20ft (6m). Since making landfall on Wednesday as a powerful Category 4 hurricane , the now tropical storm has left thousands of people without power, uprooted trees, turned homes and marinas into ruins and killed at least 2 people. After carving an agonizing path of destruction across the Florida Panhandle, Georgia and southeastern Alabama for almost 10 hours, Hurricane Michael finally slowed to a tropical storm at midnight and continued to weaken early Thursday.
