From 2012 to 2017, the melt rate increased to more than 241 billion tons a year (219 billion metric tons), according to the study Wednesday in the journal Nature . Before 2012, ice loss held steady at 76 billion tonnes (approximately 83.78 billion USA tons) per year, for 0.2 millimeters (approximately 0.008 inches) of sea level rise. (more...)

In addition to measuring the storms size and opacity, like NASA's other spacecraft, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, or MRO, can measure wind speed. "Out of those seasonal storms that do occur only about a dozen or so have ever, in the historical record or the modern record, expanded to circle the planet or cover the globe". (more...)
Astronomers see how black hole rips apart star
- June 17, 2018

Researchers believed that black holes eat stars fairly regularly, but previously had not witnessed the act. Supermassive black holes that are millions to billions times the mass of the sun are thought to lurk in the hearts of most , if not all, large galaxies. (more...)
Humans are Making Mammals Return to the Night Life Humans are Making Mammals Return to the Night Life
- June 16, 2018

Its results highlight the powerful and widespread process by which animals alter their behavior alongside people: human disturbance is creating a more nocturnal natural world. "Humans are now this ubiquitous terrifying force on the planet and we are driving all the other mammals back into the night-time", she says. The information was collected by remotely triggered cameras, Global Positioning System and radio collars and direct observation. (more...)

- June 15, 2018

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt is facing fresh skepticism among Republicans, including one of his staunchest supporters from the Sooner State. "All these things that are coming are really not good things", said Sen. "This is no way for any public official to treat taxpayers", the influential conservative magazine continued. Inhofe pointed out that even if Pruitt were to depart, his legacy of rolling back environmental protections, climate denial and boosting the coal industry would ... (more...)

The astronomers studied the distribution and motion of carbon monoxide gas throughout the disk, which emits a specific wavelength of light that ALMA is created to detect. Circling around HD 163296 is a protoplanetary disc , a ring of gas and dust discovered around young stars. Of the CO molecule emits very characteristic radiation in the millimeter wavelength range, which is accepted by the ALMA antennas, and can be studied in detail. (more...)

- June 15, 2018

Tests run on the suspected moon dust suggest that experts are divided on whether the material was legitimately from a past moon mission. While a proactive lawsuit against the agency might appear slightly paranoid for a small vial of alleged moon dust, it's not. (more...)
How much has ice melting in Antarctica contributed to sea level rise? How much has ice melting in Antarctica contributed to sea level rise?
- June 15, 2018

But another decade after that, between 2012 and 2017, that number was 219 billion metric tons of ice lost per year. It's possible, however, that Antarctica alone can add about half a foot to sea level rise by the end of the century, said Andrew Shepherd , the lead author of the study and a professor of earth observation at the University of Leeds in England. - June 14, 2018

Another study in Nature on Wednesday found that East Antarctic ice sheet didn't retreat significantly 2 million to 5 million years ago when heat-trapping carbon dioxide levels were similar to what they are now. And they found that it's melting faster than they thought. Most of the ice loss charted stems from rapid melting in West Antarctica, and especially its Pine Island and Thwaites Glaciers. (more...)

- June 13, 2018

First detected by NASA on June 1, the storm ballooned to more than 18 million square.km and included the Opportunity's current location at Perseverance Valley in the Red Planet by June 8. Full dust storms like this and the one that took place in 2007 are rare, but not surprising. During southern summer, sunlight warms dust particles, lifting them higher into the atmosphere and creating more wind. (more...)

Martian Dust Storm Sends NASA's Opportunity Rover into Hibernation Mode
- June 12, 2018

The U.S. space agency reports in a Sunday afternoon, June 10 update that the data received from Opportunity informed engineers that the rover has enough battery charge to communicate with controllers based in Pasadena, California. And it's seen dust storms bigger than the one it's experiencing now. However, here the storm could actually help - the dust that blocks out the Sun's rays also absorbs heat, which raises the ambient temperature around the rover. (more...)
