It will be completely dark Monday afternoon during the solar eclipse . Activists in Durham brought a ladder up to the statue and used a rope to pull down the Confederate Soldiers Monument that was dedicated in 1924 . Lee statue there. A law was passed in North Carolina in 2015 that explicitly bans the removal of monuments without the approval of the state. If you want to see a total solar eclipse over the United States but can't get to this one, you'll have to wait about seven years: The next path of totality will sweep northward from Texas to New England on April 8, 2024. This is the only time you can see the sun's upper atmosphere because the sun's surface is usually too bright.
