The death toll nationwide rose to 1,222 after 57 people died in the last 24 hours, Russia's coronavirus crisis response centre said, after revising the previous day's tally. Sobyanin said there had been progress in expanding testing, allowing the authorities to treat those in need more quickly. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases here is rising steadily each day. JPMorgan Chase said on Friday that it had received about $ 15 billion in the second round of funding for the paycheck protection program , including about $ 8.4 billion for small businesses in the tri-state area. But for local business owners, it's just the money that matters most. The loans, part of the government's $2 trillion relief coronavirus relief package, are meant to help businesses hit hard by the virus retain their workers or rehire those who were laid off. (more...)

Representative Peter DeFazio, who chairs the House Transportation Committee, called on the FAA Wednesday to "require masks or other face coverings for all crewmembers and passengers on USA flights" and to require airlines 'adopt reasonable, sound procedures for ensuring that passengers are spaced at safe distances from one another'. McDonald's is temporarily changing how restaurants get their supply of beef and pork, as the USA faces potential meat shortages due to slaughterhouse closures. Meanwhile, same-store sales fell 34.7% in March in its global operated markets segment, which includes France, Italy and the UK. Kempczinski also said that he will be reducing his salary by half until at least September 30, and four other execs would also be taking 25% salary cuts. (more...)

This causes huge swings in Berkshire's net results that Buffett considers meaningless. While Berkshire's operating earnings climbed in the first quarter, Buffett warned of pain from the virus's fallout. A year ago, Nio reported its co-founder was to leave the company, and not long after that, it laid off 1,200 employees.
