The first shipments of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine have been despatched from a manufacturing centre in Belgium, allowing most health authorities to begin delivering jabs to the most vulnerable across the continent from today. "Vaccination will start tomorrow in Spain, coordinated with the rest of Europe", Health Minister Salvador Illa wrote on Twitter. As the monitoring continues, it is expected that other cases of this variant and other variants of concern may be found in Canada. Ottawa Public Health reported 48 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday and 16 on Tuesday. As of Sunday night, 4,460 people in IL were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. On Sunday, the 38th death was a 73-year-old female who developed respiratory failure and was unable to overcome her illness. There are now 34 orange counties (substantial community spread), as compared to 42 orange counties from the previous report. It is up from 20 to 48, almost half the state's counties . (more...)

The passenger's wife had started telling people that her husband had exhibited COVID-19 symptoms before the flight, and other passengers were outraged to find that the man had been allowed on the plane. In a tweet to United Airlines the next day, Hubbard wrote, "Can I ask how you guys let a covid positive man on my flight last night?" The virus might have weakened patients who were still dealing with these conditions, or it could have decreased the treatment they got, he said. The new variant is now being referred to as "SARS-CoV-2 VUI 202012/01", the CDC said. In addition, there is concern that mutations could decrease the effectiveness of monoclonal antibody treatments, which use laboratory-made proteins that mimic the immune system's capability to fight off viruses. There are 66,976 COVID-19 tests still under investigation provincewide. Health officials are expected to update the number of COVID-19 cases, deaths and recoveries across the province. The situation in Ontario hospitals is "serious", including a 74 per cent increase in hospitalizations over the past month and an 80 per cent increase in ICU admissions that puts hospitals' ability to schedule non-urgent surgeries at risk, the statement said. Jesse Martinez , 37, was being treated at the Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster, police say, and was housed in a two person room with an 82-year-old roommate. ABC 7 reported the killing took place on December 17 at Antelope Valley Hospital. The victim, who did not know Martinez outside of sharing a hospital room with him, died the next day. (more...)
