The AEM originally planned to make a decision on Moderna's competitor vaccine on January 12, but has also brought it forward a week, as it has with Pfizer-BioNTech's. The leaders of Poland and Hungary urged acceleration during the last European summit last week, seconded by Berlin. In a closed-door meeting in Amsterdam on Monday, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) granted the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine a conditional marketing authorization, green lighting the drug for distribution. She confirmed that the new virus strain could be 70% more transmissible, while saying this was an initial figure. Is this something to be anxious about? If the virus spreads faster it will be harder to control. The ECDC stated that the new variant has "emerged at a time of the year when there has traditionally been increased family and social mixing". Britain has alerted the World Health Organization that the new variant identified this week appears to be accelerating the spread of COVID-19, saying it accounted for some 60 per cent of the capital's cases. Viruses mutate regularly, and scientists have found thousands different of mutations among samples of the virus causing Covid-19. COVID-19 killed over 1.69 million since its outbreak late 2019. Scientists are concerned about the new variant's spike protein. Whitty added that this strain of the virus may be spreading more quickly, leading to more cases. Whitty said London had informed the World Health Organization of its findings. Although there is considerable uncertainty, it may be up to 70% more transmissible than the old variant. UK's medical regulator has said that anyone with a history of anaphylaxis, or severe allergic reactions to medicine or food, should not be given the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine. East Meadow pediatrician Dr. John Zaso says the Moderna vaccine could wind up in doctors' offices and pharmacies in the near future.
