Navajo County Public Health officials confirmed on Friday that fleas in the region tested positive for the disease following similar reports from Coconino County Public Health Services District in Arizona. The CDC said outbreaks of the plague occasionally happen in the southwest during cool summers that follow wet winters. It's not the first time the plague is reported this year. (more...)

Nebraska reported 95 human cases of West Nile virus a year ago, including one death. The first positive test came from a trap in the northeastern part of Mitchell. The most vulnerable people are those who are at least 50 or have weakened immune systems. Residents are urged to avoid mosquito bites by staying inside at dawn and dusk, wearing trousers and long sleeves and using insect repellent containing DEET. (more...)
