MA public health officials on Sunday reported another 1,097 new cases of COVID-19, the second day in a row with more than 1,000 cases as the pandemic continues to see spikes across the nation and overseas . Reports of new cases have routinely been linked to gatherings and parties across the state, forcing schools to shift to online learning and prompting officials to urge people in certain communities to be tested. Due to the Listeria outbreak-a foodborne illness that can cause fever, muscle aches, and also diarrhea-ten people from Massachusetts, Florida, and NY were taken to hospitals, while one person died in Florida, after catching the infection. The bacteria in a contaminated deli product may spread to other deli meats and cheeses in shared display cases or equipment at deli counters. Everyone needs to continue to wear masks, wash their hands regularly and practice social distancing. The positivity rate is 8%. There are 538 people in treatment for COVID-19 in the hospital as of Sunday, including 109 in intensive care. The state reported an additional 890 cases Saturday, with four additional deaths. Management at the nursing home said they requested help from the HSE but that staff were not supported. A nursing home in Galway appealed for help earlier this week folowing a major outbreak. The country's number of confirmed cases is now 1579. There are 2,273 individuals who have a positive viral antigen test and are considered probable cases and 648 individuals who have a positive serology test and either COVID-19 symptoms or a high-risk exposure.
