More than one-quarter of Cayuga County's local bridges are structurally deficient, according to a new report released Tuesday by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli. "It doesn't mean any of them are at risk of falling down", he said. The report also notes bridges that are "functionally obsolete", which notes shoulders, guardrails and approach lanes that are lacking. (more...)

Pohamba Shifeta, Namibia's environment minister, said the death toll could be higher due to rangers missing carcasses already eaten by crocodiles . The hippos were found dead through the span of seven days, with the initial 10 deaths being accounted for October 1. After a large scale die-off of at least 220 hippos in Uganda in 2004 it was reported that experts feared the widespread mortality had been the result of the usually plant-eating creatures communally scavenging on the carcasses ...
