A breakdown in new cases per health unit shows there were 96 new cases reported today, but one health unit removed a previously-reported case from the list, bringing the total increase in cases to 95. "As we look to fall, what we've learned from other jurisdictions is that transmission in a school setting is a reflection of what's happening in our communities; keeping our community transmission low and slow keeps us all safe", she said. China's Sinovac Biotech Ltd launched a late-stage human trial on Tuesday that will involve as many as 1,620 patients in Indonesia for COVID-19 vaccine candidate that it is developing with Indonesia state-owned peer Bio Farma. The US government previously gave Moderna around $1 billion to fund its research efforts, bringing total US funding to around $2.5 billion. On Wednesday it was announced that a Phase 3 trial involving more than 2,000 people in Russian Federation and several Middle Eastern and Latin American countries had begun. That estimate is apparently based on vaccines Gamaleya has made with similar technology. A critical incident has been declared by Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as the county's emergency services struggle to cope with extreme levels of demand. £300 million is being put into A&E departments across England, with work to be completed by the start of next year. North Devon MP Selaine Saxby said staff at the trust had worked tirelessly over recent months and she thanked them for everything they had done to get the community through the coronavirus pandemic. The health units with the highest number of new cases in today's report include Ottawa (20 new cases), Peel (19 new cases), Toronto (16 new cases) and Windsor-Essex (12 new cases). People aged 60 and older accounted for just 14 per cent of the cases. Earlier Monday, the province announced that the Windsor-Essex region will join the rest of Ontario in Stage 3 of the province's reopening plan on Wednesday. (more...)

Most of these exposure events are located in the Vancouver Coastal Health and Interior Health regions , as well as on flights in and out of the province. Among young people who were tested for the virus that causes COVID-19, the researchers found that those who vaped were five to seven times more likely to be infected than those who did not use e-cigarettes. The study participants answered questions about whether they had ever used e-cigarettes, as well as if they vaped or smoked in the past 30 days. The study aimed to determine whether youth cigarette and e-cigarette use are linked to coronavirus disease symptoms, testing, and diagnosis. (more...)

In Florida, the total number of cases in children 17 and under rose from 16,797 on July 9 to 39,735 on August 9 - an increase of 137%, according to Florida Department of Health data. New York City reported that 3% or less of coronavirus cases were in children. The lone abstention of statewide pediatric COVID-19 data was New York , which only offers reported age distribution of cases in New York City. (more...)

There are now 472 active cases in B.C. with eight people in hospital and five of those in ICU. Ninety are isolating at home and none are hospitalized. Contact tracing is one of the most important tools for limiting the spread of COVID-19 by breaking chains of transmission, say health officials. The province has officially reported 2,786 deaths from COVID-19. No person was listed as hospitalized nor are any people in intensive care.
