The border between Australia's two most populous states will close from Tuesday for an indefinite period, Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said on Monday, following an outbreak of the coronavirus in his state. Victoria has now recorded 2,824 positive coronavirus cases, a huge portion of which have been in the past two weeks. Australia has recorded nearly 8,500 cases of coronavirus nationwide with most states and territories recording zero active cases for several days. (more...)

This raises the death toll there to 75, according to a county news release. The McPherson County Health Department this afternoon reported an 84th confirmed case of COVID-19. DHEC does not provide a county-by-county breakdown of how hospital beds are being used. The county is now at 509 cases, with 291 considered recovered, one case hospitalized and no deaths. (more...)

As for the three local colleges, it's concerned about the 20-29 age group following the recent surge. This brings the total number of staff members diagnosed to 22. DHEC data shows 69% of the beds in Beaufort County hospitals, and 44% in Jasper County, were in use. The organisation for months declined to recommend mask-wearing, partly out of supply concerns and also continued to describe the transmission of COVID-19 from people without symptoms as "rare". Although the World Health Organization has said it is considering aerosols as a possible route of transmission, it has yet to be convinced that the evidence warrants a change in guidance. (more...)

There are no tests for detecting Naegleria fowleri in water, so "recreational water users should assume that Naegleria fowleri is present in warm freshwater across the United States", says the CDC. The interim Solidarity results are now being readied for peer-reviewed publication, it added.
