In some people, it can cause a serious and potentially fatal infection of the brain and spinal cord. Her suit alleges that the death was preventable and that she should have never been left alone in her condition with the newborn child. Since the FDA's OK, there have been five reported deaths in patients who received the ORBERA intragastric balloon in four countries, one in the U.S. The company reported all five cases under its Global Product Surveillance program.
