Some countries, including Canada, had nonetheless suggested that their citizens wear non-medical masks in certain scenarios without waiting for the WHO's guidance. Many health experts have wondered why it's taken this long for the WHO to update its mask guidelines, given the accumulation of evidence that they may be helpful and have few downsides. (more...)

Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best will immediately issue an order banning officers' use of tear gas for 30 days, while the city develops new crowd management policies, Mayor Jenny Durkan said Friday. Officials will be using the next month to review crowd-control policies used by police. Nhi Tan, a medical student at the University of Washington, told The Seattle Times she joined the demonstration out of "overwhelming sadness". (more...)

There were 8,855 new infection cases overall. Earlier today NHS England said there were 123 new deaths of patients who tested positive for Covid-19 in hospitals in England, bringing the total number to 27,282. The latest coronavirus statistics also reveal that on June 6 there were 2,908 tests carried out by NHS Scotland in hospitals, care homes or the community, down from 3,552 the day before. (more...)

Astra Zeneca has already agreed to supply 100 million doses of the potential vaccine to the UK. Adrian Hill, manager of the Jenner Institute in Oxford, said: "We're thrilled to find that this significant agreement with worldwide business partners that brings to fruition the aim of both Oxford University and AstraZeneca to help ensure quite a large scale honest and equitable Covid-19 vaccine supply in low to middle-income nations around the globe". The state's second reopening phase excludes Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, which are all reporting the most coronavirus infections in the state. None of the cases are at local nursing homes. 198 people are classified as recovered. The male patient from Pulaski County was over the age of 60 and had been hospitalized as a COVID-19 patient. Bowman claimed the fundraising bonanza this week after Engel was heard at a press conference looking for time to overcome the crowd. Engel's presence in the district, or lack thereof, has been a theme of the race and was again central to Bowman's attacks during the debate. (more...)

It's been more than three weeks since the state has had more than 1,000 new coronavirus cases in a single day. The department says 936 of the fatalities have been in long-term care facilities. This study was first published on May 22 and concerns began mounting nearly immediately about this and one more study in the New England Journal of Medicine where the same company - Surgisphere - supplied data. When the independent peer-review was initiated by the journal, the co-authors themselves were unable to obtain details on the source of the data in their study from the hospitals they procured patient information from. Almost 70% of the state's deaths involved residents of nursing and personal care homes. The Douglas County Health Department has confirmed 125 new cases in the county. Lincoln County cases continue to skew younger than the statewide rate. This is the 10th death in the county related to COVID-19. Cases peaked in early April at almost 2,000 daily new cases. The county has a total of 363 cases. (more...)

The new guidance also updated the WHO's advice on the use of masks by the general public in areas with community transmission. The UK largely followed the same line until the transport secretary, Grant Schapps, announced on Thursday that face masks on public transport would be compulsory in the UK, with fines for those who disobeyed. Michael Hill, the trial's co-lead. The observational study had found that after reviewing 96,000 COVID-19 patients across six continents, those treated with hydroxychloroquine had a higher risk of heart arrhythmia and death. (more...)

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released data showing at least 95,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases and nearly 32,000 deaths in US nursing homes as of May 31. The CMS data also measured total deaths at facilities during this time period. About 88% of USA nursing homes have submitted the data. The CMS technical official on the call also noted that just finding COVID-19 in a nursing home does not automatically mean the facility was non-compliant with infection control guidelines. (more...)
