This country is missing them all and not only underestimating cases but also putting people at risk and continuing the epidemic. We think this strongly supports the idea that Moderna's vaccine is capable of protecting individuals against the virus, although we have yet to see data showing whether this efficacy is also seen in older adults, and long-term safety data will continue to be collected (for one to two years in a phase 3 trial). "And all I can tell you is, so far I seem to be okay". But the USA government agency has cited reports that the drug can cause serious heart rhythm problems in Covid-19 patients, as it warned last month against use of the medication outside hospitals. There are now outbreaks in 27 long-term care homes, retirement residences, and hospitals, and 575 residents in these facilities have tested positive for the virus. Health officials in New Brunswick are reporting no new cases of COVID-19. The website says 135 patients are now using ventilators. There have been 9,685 tests conducted in the district to determine these findings of the 37,658 conducted across Northern Ontario. (more...)

The business secretary said the Government had so far invested £47 million in vaccine programmes at Oxford and also Imperial College London, and announced a further £84 million in new funding "to help accelerate their work". Writing in The Mail on Sunday, he said: "There remains a very long way to go, and I must be frank that a vaccine might not come to fruition". The daily update on coronavirus activity in Minnesota also shows the number of people hospitalized due to the new viral illness has been almost stable over the past 5 days but the number of COVID-19 patients now requiring ICU treatment hit a new high of 225 on Friday.
