The institute has been leading Israeli efforts to develop a treatment and vaccine for the coronavirus, including the testing of blood from those who recovered from COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the virus. The regular means of growth of such a vaccine requires an extended means of pre-clinical trials on animals, adopted by scientific trials. This period allows for a full characterization of side effects and a better understanding of how different populations are affected. (more...)

The CDC also predicts the USA could go from adding about 25,000 new coronavirus cases every day to adding 200,000 or more daily by the end of the month. The White House disclaimed the projection, calling it an "internal CDC document" but saying it had not been presented to President Donald Trump's coronavirus task force and didn't comport with the task force's own analysis and projections. The construction of the "field hospital" at the ExCeL Centre in East London, which was opened by Prince Charles on April 3, was hailed as a huge success by the United Kingdom government. Giving an update on the Nightingale programme in England, the spokesman said: "Manchester has taken some patients already; Birmingham, Harrogate and Bristol are ready to take patients if needed". The Health Secretary stressed that privacy concerns were unfounded, noting the data is stored on the phone until people require a test. If the test is successful, the app will be rolled out across the country later this month, he added. The app trial being run on the Isle of Wight is voluntary, although NHS chiefs and the government have urged residents to download the app in order to improve its impact. (more...)

The goal of antibody testing is to determine whether a person has ever been exposed to the virus and if he has developed antibodies, meaning immunity to it. It declined to specify which rival tests it had studied, but said it was not referring to tests from established testing companies. Roche , at least, doesn't have those concerns about its product, saying its test has proven 100 percent accurate at detecting antibodies in the blood and 99.8 percent accurate at ruling out the presence of ... Dr Cohen initially questioned whether the wife had been exposed to fish products from China, but later confirmed that she had only been exposed to fish produced in France . All the negative PCRs for pneumonia must be tested again. But Dr Cohen pointed out that the patient's wife worked at a supermarket near Charles de Gaulle airport and could have come into contact with people who had recently arrived from China. (more...)

Tel Aviv: Israeli Defence Minister Naftali Bennett on Monday said he witnessed a "significant breakthrough" by the country's biological research institute in developing an antibody to COVID-19 infection. According to the World Health Organisation , data suggests no more than 2% to 3% of the population have the antibodies to show they were infected by the coronavirus. (more...)

Dr. Bonnie Henry said Saturday that B.C.is not entering a new phase of spread or containment but the government will provide more details about whom the virus is affecting. She said she knows outbreak measures are in place, but there's still a risk. There continue to be 23 active outbreaks in long-term care and assisted living and "a couple" of acute-care units, although none of those outbreaks are on Vancouver Island. (more...)

He said his medical team revisited test results of 24 patients with respiratory infections and tested negative for flu and other kinds of coronavirus in December and January, among them a male patient showed positive for Covid-19. It was not clear whether those colleagues had travelled to China , and the local health authority should investigate, he added. An outbreak has been declared at a Calgary Purolator distribution centre after 30 employees tested positive for COVID-19. There are also 621 cases confirmed within continuing care facilities within the province. The total number of deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus in Alberta has officially crossed the 100 mark. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Alberta Health has administered and completed over 164,000 tests. (more...)

She said the data suggests B.C. could move towards a doubling of the current rate of contacts most people have with others without causing a spike in COVID-19 cases but returning to pre-pandemic lifestyles of past year could be risky. The death rate also rose on Saturday, with health officials saying two more have died. Dermatologists in Spain were asked to share details of coronavirus patients they had seen who had developed rashes in the previous two weeks. This is what allows the virus to attach and invade cells to deliver its genetic material . The researchers noted that preliminary observations suggest that the virus may also infect cells in the gut. "The antibody binds to a domain that is conserved in both SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 , explaining its ability to neutralize both viruses". Two more residents of continuing care facilities have died in the least 24 hours from COVID-19. Alberta Health has also confirmed one additional death on Sunday, in the Calgary zone . While the Oxford vaccine, called "ChAdOx1 nCoV-19", is yet to be proven to work against COVID-19, the firm made a decision to start manufacturing it as it had shown success in animal trials and had progressed to tests on humans.
