Care home coronavirus deaths ‘could be double the number reported’

The estimation is based on figures released by the Office for National Statistics on Tuesday which said the United Kingdom death toll could be 41% higher than originally reported due to deaths outside hospitals. Care providers have said hundreds of elderly people in care homes are dying from the coronavirus but not being included in the government's daily figures. (more...)

The cats live in two separate areas of NY. The 4-year-old Malayan tiger, named Nadia, was tested after starting to showing signs of illness on March 27, 11 days after the zoo closed to the public because of the virus. Authorities have said there's no indication that the animals are transmitting the virus to humans. Someone inside the house, with mild or no symptoms, could have also transmitted the virus. (more...)

In a bombshell statement issued today the Care Quality Commission said it expects a "significant increase" in the official number of care home deaths next week. There have been around 17,000 excess deaths across the United Kingdom since mid-March, but this number is over two weeks out of date due to the lag in reporting. (more...)

Researchers on Monday unveiled a coronavirus "heat map " powered by Facebook data. Facebook doesn't receive, collect or store individual survey responses, and CMU doesn't learn who took the survey. Florida had 27,869 total cases as of Tuesday evening, eighth-most in the country despite having the third-highest state population behind California and Texas (which only has about 20,000 cases and 528 deaths statewide). In total, five inmates at the Parnall Correctional Facility have died of COVID-19. The department also reminds residents that if you are tested for COVID-19 that you are to remain in home isolation until you receive negative test results. (more...)

The New York Times reported there is insufficient data to recommend either for or against the use of antiviral drugs that affect the immune system in patients with coronavirus who have mild, moderate, severe, or critical illness.
