The move appears to expand criteria that had previously limited testing to patients who had been hospitalized, absent certain extenuating circumstances such as contact with a coronavirus patient. Dr. Melissa Miller, director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at UNC Medical Center, said her lab developed a test based on the World Health Organization model, but couldn't use it until it went through a federal approval process for expedited tests.
