No single common supplier has been identified. According to the CDC , as of October 17, 92 people have been reported sick from 29 states, including Florida, and 21 people have been hospitalized. Salmonella normally causes mild upset stomach, but it can be serious in the elderly, young children and those with compromised immune systems. Federal health officials have issued an unusual warning about a growing number of cases of a polio-like illness called acute flaccid myelitis , also known as AFM . Environmental agents, viruses and other pathogens are still being considered. Since 2014, 386 cases have been confirmed , the CDC said on Tuesday. Physicians first began noticing an increase in AFM patients in 2014, with roughly 120 confirmed cases. There is no specific treatment for AFM, but neurologists who specialize in treating brain and spinal cord illnesses may recommend certain interventions, such as physical or occupational therapy, on a case-by-case basis.
