Nearly simultaneously, an avalanche struck a nearby ski resort. Japan's Meteorological Agency urged nearby residents to stay away from Mt. Kusatsu Shirane after it detected what it said was "slight volcanic activity". The agency also said people should be careful of volcanic rocks in the area within two kilometers from the crater. It was unclear whether the avalanche was caused by the volcanic activity, but they occurred almost simultaneously. (more...)

The Rajasthan government on Monday filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat slated to open in theaters in the state on January 25. These two states along with five other states had banned the release of the film. The states have asked the court instead to rule that individual state governments should be allowed to block the release on law and order grounds. (more...)

Senate Democrats had hinged their support for any spending bill on DACA's renewal. Thirty-three Democrats joined 48 Republicans to end debate in the 100-member chamber on a bill extending the government's spending authority through February 8, setting the stage for final Senate passage.
