An attacker with an automatic weapon opened fire on pol. The gunman who shot and killed a police officer on the Champs-Elysees in Paris was detained in February for threatening police and then freed. Describing the incident, witnesses said how a auto parked next to a police transport vehicle before a man got out and began firing an automatic weapon, killing one policeman and injuring another - plus a passing female tourist. During what was referred to as "the mother of all marches" scuffles between security forces and protesters broke out, as the death toll rises to at least seven lives so far this month. The protests taking place across the country were expected to be the biggest in three years, putting extra pressure on President Maduro to negotiate with the opposition and find a way of easing the country's economic crisis. A spokeswoman for the Paris police, Johanna Primevert, said the gunman attacked police guarding an area near the Franklin Roosevelt metro station Thursday night at the center of the heavily traveled Champs-Elysees. ISIS issued a statement saying an Islamic State "fighter" carried out the attack. "This must be the priority", he said. The attack unfolded on the famed Champs-Elysees around 9 p.m. The statement said the attacker is a Belgian national. Iraqi officials confirmed following the release that over the course of the year-long negotiations for the group's return, Iran, Qatar and the Lebanese Shi'ite militant group Hezbollah had become involved in the talks. The group officially denies it was behind the kidnapping and no other group has publicly claimed responsibility for the abduction.
