In another action that could help solidify Erdogan's rule, Turkey's parliament on Tuesday approved a three-month extension of the state of emergency that was declared following a failed military coup previous year. Republican People's Party leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu accused the electoral board of bias and of favoring the governing party. CHP spokeswoman Selin Sayek Boke vowed that the party would use all means to challenge the result and could even consider withdrawing from parliament. (more...)

President Ashraf Ghani's office declared a national day of mourning for the victims of the Taliban-claimed attack on the Shaheen 209th Corps barracks outside Balkh province's capital, Mazar-i-Sharif. According to witnesses, confusion and chaos prevailed at the army camp as soldiers could not ascertain the attackers' identity in army uniforms.
