McConnell explained that he pushed for retaining the Treasury Department's ability to use "extraordinary measures" to avoid a more immediate need to raise the debt ceiling. And that's exactly what he did. The 2017 fiscal year budget ends September 30, and is slated to add another $700 billion deficit to the over $20 trillion in outstanding debt. (more...)

Most of Florida remained without power yesterday as it emerged that 420,000 British people were in the state when Hurricane Irma struck. Here's a stunning animation put together by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's COMET Program that shows the intensity of winds from a Category 1 hurricane all the way up to a Category 5. At least 13 people are dead after Hurricane Irma slammed Caribbean islands through the night of September 6 and into the following day. The storm is expected to strengthen, and could become a hurricane by Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center . (more...)
