The test-fired missile probably was a medium-range ballistic missile called a KN-17, a USA official told CNN. At the meeting, South Korea's foreign minister urged proactive sanctions. The THAAD deployment has drawn protests from China, which says the powerful radar that can penetrate its territory will undermine regional security, and from residents of the area in which it is being deployed, anxious they will be a target for North Korean missiles. North Korea often also marks significant dates by displaying its military capability. Pyongyang said after its fifth nuclear test in September that it detonated a miniaturized nuclear warhead that could be mounted on a missile, though analysts say the claim is almost impossible to verify. Next week lawmakers plan to pass a $1 trillion package financing the government through September 30. The White House did not immediately clarify whether he was holding meetings or golfing. Mr Pence told reporters he had reassured Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull that the USA would hold up its share of the agreement struck by the Obama administration, even if the United States did not "admire" the deal. Pence said Wednesday that the United States would counter any North Korean attack with an "overwhelming and effective" response. A dispatcher at the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office said officers were chasing numerous injury reports. The National Weather Service says at least one tornado hit Canton, about 50 miles east of Dallas. Police say 65-year-old Julia Schwede was killed when a tree was blown into her home Saturday night.
