The quake shook a large swath of the country and was felt as far north as Mexico City - 1,000 km (600 miles) from the quake epicenter - where people ran out of their homes in their pajamas as buildings trembled and swayed. The U.S. Geological Survey initially estimated a magnitude of 8.0 before revising it to 8.1. Highway 11 and Interstate 75 are now shut down around Wacker and Resolute Forest Products has locked down, according to Trotter. Miami-Dade County officials have told coastal area residents they will be asked to evacuate as early as Wednesday afternoon. "We are also praying that it doesn't come our way". Monroe covers the Florida Keys, while Miami-Dade's Zones A and B include Miami Beach and Key Biscayne. Miami-Dade County has also equipped several gas stations and supermarkets with generators so the retailers will be able to operate if the storm causes power outages. (more...)
