Hurricane Irma is now a Category 5 storm with maximum sustained winds of 185 miles per hour at its core. Irma may not make landfall, but that doesn't mean the storm won't cause a substantial amount of damage. Long lines formed at gas stations and people pulled shutters out of storage and put up plywood to protect their homes and businesses. Ringold Street shortly after 4 p.m. Monday. The vehicle hit the bystanders a block apart around 4 p.m. and at least eight people were believed to be seriously injured, ABC6 reported . On Wednesday morning its maximum sustained wind speeds had reached nearly 60mph and it was moving west, from its position some 1,200 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, at about 13mph. Jose is in the Atlantic, and is expected to turn more to the north later in the week from its current westward track. Katia is expected to threaten Mexico as a large area of dry, sinking air over Texas and Louisiana will keep the storm south of the continental United States for now, AccuWeather said. (more...)

Crews battling the Eagle Creek Fire in the Columbia River Gorge saved a almost century-old historic lodge. "Our hearts are breaking", Multnomah County Chair Deborah Kafoury said at a news conference. As of Wednesday, winds had changed direction, but continued blowing down the gorge. Temperatures are expected to be cooler Wednesday, but a warning will be in effect in the afternoon for potential lightning. (more...)

The fire is now established in the Walton drainage to the south. Midday winds and rising temperatures led to some increased activity on the fire, but it was mainly flare-ups well within the perimeter of the fire, officials said.
