The Fire and Disaster Management Agency said more than 40 were injured in Osaka and nearby prefectures of Hyogo and Kyoto. Japanese media reported one of the likely victims is a 9-year-old girl at a school. In all, 14 people were inside the SUV, including the driver and passenger, according to the sheriff. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene while a fifth died at a hospital. Some of the victims were flown by helicopter to San Antonio for medical treatment. "This, I think, is a ideal example, of why are borders need to be secured", Boyd said. (more...)

It set off multiple building fires and toppled walls. Passengers were evacuated as there morning commute was disrupted. Trains in the area were halted as a precaution, public broadcaster NHK said. The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 struck around 8am on Monday about 10kms underground, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Heavy shaking was reported across the Kansai region, but there was no tsunami alert issue after the quake, which was centered inland. (more...)
