Unmarked graves found at another former residential school in Canada

Canada Celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day Today

A news release Wednesday from Cowessess and the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous First Nations (FSIN), which represents Saskatchewan's First Nations, did not give a specific number but said it will be the most found to date in Canada.

They are asking the media to be respectful of survivors, descendants and the communities affected by the discovery.

The federal government has since offered $27 million in funding for all First Nations communities to help identify and investigate marked and unmarked burial grounds near residential schools.

"Manitoba wishes to do its share in recognizing, reconciling, and healing".

This is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada.

Perry Bellegarde, the chief of the Assembly of First Nations, said in a tweet late Wednesday that the finding at Cowessess is "absolutely tragic, but not surprising".

The nuns taught at the Kamloops residential school and provided nursing and child-care services from 1890 until 1970, according to Sisters of St. Ann president Sister Marie Zarowny.

Clark said he has attended the annual Cowesses First Nations Christmas supper for Saskatoon band members and seen the vibrancy and warmth of the community.

Chief William Morin of the Enoch Cree First Nation welcomed the announcement.

He said the province needs to follow the direction of First Nations to be respectful and successful.

"While this amount is an initial start to begin the work, it will certainly take far more of a commitment and a collaborative long-term relationship with our governmental partners at all levels to step up and engage in this work".

Barbara Nolan, language commissioner for the Anishinabek Nation, recalled her time as a student at Spanish Residential School on the north shore of Lake Huron, where she would get "strapped" every time she spoke Anishinaabemowin.

The City of Saskatoon's flags will be lowered to half-mast at 9 a.m. on Thursday to honour the children found in unmarked graves at the former Marieval Indian Residential School on Cowessess First Nation.
