According to Union Health Ministry, the weekly positivity rate now stands at 5.66 per cent, the daily positivity rate has dropped to 4.66 per cent, less than 10 per cent for 16th consecutive days.
The cumulative caseload has reached 2,90,89,069. Till Tuesday, the health department had stated the number of deaths to be under 5,500.
The country also witnessed 1,62,664 patients recovering in the last 24 hours, which took the total number of COVID-19 recoveries in India to 2.75 crores.
In addition, there has been a decrease of 72,287 in active cases to 12.31 lakh cases on Wednesday, less than 13 lakh after 57 days.
The spurt in the number of deaths reflects those reported at private hospitals, in transit to health facilities, under home isolation and those dying of post-COVID complications after they tested negative and were discharged from hospitals, Additional Secretary (Health) Pratyaya Amrit told reporters on Wednesday.
Bihar, as of June 9, has 7,353 active COVID-19 cases, with a total of 7,15,179 positive cases.
India earlier registered highest fatalities due to Covid-19 on May 21 with 4,529 deaths, which crossed both the USA and Brazil's record deaths in 24 hours.
While the positivity rate in the second wave is now far lower than the first-wave peak, the number of active cases still remains higher than a year ago, an indicator of the long trail left behind by the second wave. As many as 18,73,485 tests were carried out in the preceding 24-hour period.
Cumulatively, 24,27,26,693 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered so far under the nationwide vaccination drive in the country.
