Gunman opens fire in Austin, Texas, wounds 13 before escaping

Texas: At least 13 wounded in downtown Austin shooting

"It was very hard to contain the scene, it was very hard for [Emergency Medical Services] to make their way into this crowd", Interim Austin Police Department (ADP) Chief Joe Chacon said, describing the size of the crowd as near "pre-pandemic" during an early morning news conference. The shooter escaped and is still at large, according to a statement released by the Austin Police Department.

It comes as disturbing footage emerged showing crowds of revellers calmly queuing outside a bar while officers were still giving first aid to the injured.

The street was barricaded and bars later ordered to close so police could collect evidence.

Interim Police Chief Joseph Chacon updates reporters on the attack in Austin, Texas, early Saturday.

Eleven of the injured people were taken to one local hospital, another person was taken to a different hospital, and the other person went to an urgent care facility with gunshot wounds, Chacon said.

"Our officers responded very quickly", added Chacon.

"They were able to immediately begin life saving measures for many of these patients", he added.

"I can not say that there's no further public danger at this point, because the suspect is not in custody", Chacon said. "It appears at this point to be isolated to this one area", Chacon said.

Authorities have said they will be briefing the media on the latest information regarding the shooting but have not yet confirmed a time.

The shooter or shooters remain at large, and detectives were working rapidly to view an array of video gathered by bystanders and other cameras near the scene in the 400 block of East Sixth Street to identify any suspects. Chacon repeated that at an early morning press conference, noting that there weren't many details about the suspected shooter other than: "Black male wearing a black shirt with a skinny build and with dreadlocks-dreadlock-type hair".
